Ahh, January… the holiday letdown of it all. Come recover at the Belmont… relax and recharge for the night or the weekend… or stop by BarBelmont and catch the view. We'll help you start your year off on a stress-free track.

Ho-hum, ho-hum. The holidays are officially over. I hope everyone got what they needed and a little of what they wanted. All I received was a tennis racket and an extra 15 pounds that will take me until May to lose. Seriously though, the tennis racket was great. Thanks Staci.

We here at the Belmont are looking forward to a new exciting year. Our new restaurant, The Cliff Diner, and the Belmont Health Club will both be opening in the very near future. We are all busy trying to make sure everything is just perfect. I’m ecstatic to see what Chef Doug Brown is going to offer at the first tasting.

My morbid curiosity was aroused when I heard what was happening in Fair Park’s Museum of Nature & Science. The "Body Worlds" exhibit has finally made it to Dallas. The exhibit shows real human bodies dissected and posed in a variety of different manners for all to see. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon with the family. "Body Works" will be on display for all who have the courage until May 28th, 2007.

For me, the best thing about the beginning of a new year is that football is on its way out so the sport of princes can be paid better attention. I'm talking about the NBA and more specifically, my beloved Mavericks. The Mavs have seven home games at the American Airlines Center during the month of January. So come out and show your love for the greatest NBA team ever assembled. Hey, while you’re out why not drop by the Belmont for cocktails and appetizers before or after the game. We’re just 2 short miles from the AACenter. See you soon!

We loved our birthday month.  If you didn't hear (I'm sure you did, we told everybody), the Belmont turned 1 in December.  We had a lot of champagne toasts… one every day, in fact.  Many of you celebrated with us and we loved that.  One day WFAA Channel 8's "Why Guy" dropped in to talk to Clayton about the fete.  Clayton tried to be cool but the Why Guy busted him big time.  See for yourself... Art With A Viewis an ongoing series of rotating art and creative events at the Belmont. January's installation will feature a group show of local, Oak Cliff artists organized by La Reunion, a Texas not-for-profit organization founded in 2006 to establish an artist residency program in Dallas. In fact, the subject of the art will be Oak Cliff and La Reunion.

The story of La Reunion is deeply rooted in early Dallas history. La Reunion was a socialist utopian community formed in 1855 by French, Belgian, and Swiss colonists in an area that is now part of Oak Cliff. The community was led by the French philosopher Francois Marie Charles Fourier whose followers and associates established over 40 similar colonies in various parts of the United States of America during the 1800s. The colony near present-day Dallas was incorporated into the emerging city of Dallas around 1860. The original Dallas La Reunion colony was instrumental in the cultural formation of Dallas and specifically Oak Cliff in the mid-1800's. The first piano, brewery and butcher shop were here as a direct result of their settlement. Although they failed as a utopian artist colony, they have had a lasting impact on current Dallas through street names, descendants, and artistic sensibilities.

Modern day La Reunion is planning their future home on 35 wooded acres in Oak Cliff, seven miles from downtown Dallas. They will provide housing and studio space to traditional and new media artists, and their intimate gallery / installation / performance space called 'the living room' will be open to the public. Artists on the local, national, and international levels will be encouraged to apply for residencies ranging from one week to one year.

The Art With A View installation of La Reunion artist will open with a reception Wednesday, January 24, 6 to 9 pm in the BarBelmont Lounge and Terrace, and will remain on exhibit through March 13.

Throughout the ages, medical scholars and students have strived to understand how our bodies function through exploration of real human specimens. BODY WORLDS, the most highly attended touring exhibition in the world, takes this tradition one step further by presenting a new look at the human body.

The exhibition features approximately 200 authentic human specimens, including whole bodies, plastinated individual organs and transparent body slices that have been preserved through the process of Plastination, a technique that replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics. BODY WORLDS offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see and understand our own physiology and health and to gain new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human.
