We may not get much fall color in Dallas, but there is now doubt that fall has arrived when the Texas State Fair opens. YUM, all that food that drips on your shoe...

“Bittersweet October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.
-Carol Bishop Hipps
This quote really sums up what this month means to me. It is a time to float through life in perfect weather, maybe spend some perfect family time at the State Fair, while wearing the perfect outfit; a striped five button cashmere cardigan with jeans.
I am going to make it a point this year to gather up the family and head to the Fair Grounds for a fried feast just like the good o’ days: a fried Corny Dog accompanied by a fried Snickers, and I will wash it all down with a fried latte! Of course when I come down from my fried sugar high I will need to repent, so I will head over to Bishop Arts Yoga where I just signed up for a membership. Downward Dog anyone? The new Zen Sushi also opened in the Bishop Arts District and nothing goes with a cool autumn night like hot sake.
And although you may see trees losing there leaves, it feels like the Belmont has just blossomed! With the restaurant finally open and running beautifully and the fitness center in full swing, it is like a whole new place. So if you haven’t been here recently, don’t be a stranger. This is a great time to come and relax before the hustle and bustle of the holidays begin.

BELMONT HEALTH CLUB
People greatly overestimate what they can accomplish in a short amount of time .People greatly underestimate what they can accomplish in the long term.
-Brian Buffini
A primary enemy of consistent progress in exercise and nutrition is setting unrealistic goals. “I am going to get in shape in two weeks…or two months.” Goals that are vague and not attainable set us up for failure and frustration.
Instead, set a goal that will allow success that is measurable. “This fall I am going to walk 20 minutes three times a week.” Or “I’m going to take my lunch to work two times a week so I can control the quality of nutrition on those days.”
Build on specific increments of success rather than setting yourself up for a vague sense of failure.

Art With A View is an ongoing series of rotating art and creative events at the Belmont.
The Belmont is pleased to host #6IMAGES, the Dallas Portfolio Exchange's sixth annual exhibition of selected photographers. The collection of fine art prints is a compilation of 12 Dallas commercial photographers, who were given creative carte blanche to capture what they feel passionate about. In an effort to inspire themselves, they hope to inspire others. This year the twelve contributing photographers are: Kent Barker, Stewart Choen, Richard Doherty, Max Helfman, Scott Jenke, David Lyles, Nancy Newberry, Kenda North, Eric Pearle, Danny Piassick, Matthew Savins and Greg Stephens.
Founder and organizer, David Lyles, also a photographer, conceived the Exchange in 2001. "Over the last six years I've had the great fortune to exchange fine art prints with commercial photographers. These are people who I have admired through ads and editorials, in all sorts of publications, nationally and globally. It as been my great pleasure to collect the photographs captured by this talented group."
The opening reception for #6IMAGES will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, from 6 to 9 pm in the BarBelmont Lounge and Terrace. The collection will remain on exhibition at the Belmont through December 2, 2007.
For more information about The Dallas Portfolio Exchange contact David Lyles at 214.635.1555.

PLACE: Hollywood. TIME: Academy Award Night. CHARACTERS: A vain auteur of voguishly violent films, his ex, his sardonic daughter, his on-the-make date, murderers inspired by his movie, and a voyeuristic TV crew. Elton’s award-winning comedy has vulgar vigor and smart-mouthed one-liners, but surprisingly has the moral purpose of a Jacobean revenge drama. (Rated VERY Adult).

The Twilight of the Golds
Through October 21, 2007
by Jonathan Tolins
Directed by - Doug Miller
If your parents knew everything about you before you were born, would you be here? That is the question posed in this topical drama. All is well when Suzanne Gold and her close New York family discover that she is pregnant, until a prenatal test reveals that the baby will most likely be homosexual. The news forces the entire Gold family to confront issues of bigotry, evolution and the limits of love. Critically acclaimed Off-Broadway, Twilight of the Golds is a powerful human drama with plenty of humor and warmth. Presented by the Uptown Players, and featuring the theatrical talents of the Belmont’s own, Clayton Farris. |

The Ladies of the Camellias
Through October 6, 2007
See website for additional special performances.
Join Echo Theatre as it continues its 10th Anniversary Celebration Sept. 14-Oct. 6, 2007 with THE LADIES OF THE CAMELLIAS by Lillian Groag, a hilarious love letter to the theater centering on an imagined meeting between famous divas Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse. An insightful examination of art, politics, and what it means to act is cleverly woven into the farcical collision of towering egos, monstrous talents, and fanatical political ideals. Rapier wits (as well as actual rapiers!) are employed as these marvelous creatures of the theatre confront true anarchy and an even more terrifying specter: the impending arrival of the director! The Ladies of the Camellias. |
