As we say "Adios" to another Texas January - complete with ice and snow - and
"Howdy" to February, we can only hope that the groundhog won't see his shadow this year, insuring an early spring. In my opinion, one of the best parts about the changing season is getting to change my wardrobe. Zola's on Bishop, for example, is a great place to snag some fantastic and fashionable vintage threads to wear this season.
If you're looking for late night tips, be sure to check out totally hot, up-and-coming local acts, St. Vincent and Midlake, at the Granada Theater on February 24th. After the show, ease your grumbling tummy with Big D's Hot Dogs across the street from the Granada. |
This February is a fabulous month for music in Dallas... you can also see native Texan Ben Kweller perform with Gomez at the Gypsy Tea Room on February 26th.
If we're talking about events in February, we can't forget about the love sensation that is Valentine's Day. Treat your sweetie, (or yourself) to a delectable meal at Amuse on Lamar, where the food is so fresh and creative. Splurge on a yummy bottle of wine... and then come back and snuggle into one of our Valentine's Day Specials at the Belmont.
Happy February everyone! Stay warm, have fun and eat well!

January was a busy month… to all of our friends and guests who stayed at the Belmont during the January Markets at the Dallas Market Center and Fashion industry Gallery (aka f.i.g.), we just want to say again how much we enjoyed seeing you. We hope you enjoyed your visit with us. We look forward to seeing you again next time. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to enhance your next visit. |
Art With A View is an ongoing series of rotating art and creative events at the Belmont. Our current installation features fourteen local, Oak Cliff artists organized by La Reunion, a Texas not-for-profit organization founded in 2006, to establish an artist residency program in Dallas. In fact, the theme of the installation is Oak Cliff and La Reunion.
The story of La Reunion is deeply rooted in early Dallas history. La Reunion was a utopian community formed in 1855 by French, Belgian, and Swiss colonists in an area that is now part of Oak Cliff. The community was led by the French philosopher Francois Marie Charles Fourier whose followers and associates established over 40 similar colonies in various parts of the United States of America during the 1800s. The colony near present-day Dallas was incorporated into the emerging city of Dallas around 1860. The original Dallas La Reunion colony was instrumental in the cultural formation of Dallas and specifically Oak Cliff in the mid-1800’s. The first piano, brewery and butcher shop were here as a direct result of their settlement. Although they failed as a utopian artist colony, they have had a lasting impact on current Dallas through street names, descendants, and artistic sensibilities.
Modern day La Reunion is planning their future home on 35 wooded acres in Oak Cliff, seven miles from downtown Dallas. They will provide housing and studio space to traditional and new media artists, and their intimate gallery / installation / performance space called 'the living room' will be open to the public. Artists on the local, national, and international levels will be encouraged to apply for residencies ranging from one week to one year.
The Art With A View installation of La Reunion artists will remain on exhibit through March 13.

Christina Aguilera
American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX
Wed, February 21, 2007, 7:30 PM
Paying tribute to the music that inspired her, pop icon Christina Aguilera's third studio album, Back To Basics, is a modern take on vintage jazz, soul and blues from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. The album is wildly inventive with a throwback style creating a sound that's gritty and raw. |

A lot of kids are raised in musical families, but few had the introduction to music that Ben Kweller had. Young Kweller, not even old enough for kindergarten at the time, would try to be like the famous guitarist when he picked up his own toy version of the instrument. He played the piano since his very early childhood and, by the age of eight, Kweller had graduated from toy guitars and simply tapping the ivories to penning his own tunes. Not yet 20 years old, he signed with Island Records as a solo artist in 1999.
The British band Gomez is a five-piece, consisting of Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitar), Tom Gray (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul Blackburn (bass, guitar), Olly Peacock (drums), and Ian Ball (vocals, guitar, harmonica). Whereas the majority of up-and-coming British bands are either retro-pop (à la Oasis), trip-hop (Portishead), or space rock (the Verve, Radiohead), Gomez is one of the few to contain bluesy elements in their rock. |

Body Worlds -
The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies
Dallas Museum of Nature and Science, Fair Park
Now through May 28, 2007
http://www.scienceplace.org/
Throughout the ages, medical scholars and students have strived to understand how our bodies function through exploration of real human specimens. BODY WORLDS, the most highly attended touring exhibition in the world, takes this tradition one step further by presenting a new look at the human body.
|
| The exhibition features approximately 200 authentic human specimens, including whole bodies, plastinated individual organs and transparent body slices that have been preserved through the process of Plastination, a technique that replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics. BODY WORLDS offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see and understand our own physiology and health and to gain new appreciation and respect for what it means to be human. |
